A Lesson Designed Around Each Student

Each lesson is thoughtfully adapted to the student’s age, experience, learning style, musical needs, and long-term goals. Lessons are structured but flexible, allowing students to receive clear guidance while progressing at an appropriate and encouraging pace.

A lesson may include:
  • Technique and healthy playing habits
  • Repertoire and musical expression
  • Note reading, sight-reading, and rhythm
  • Ear training and music theory
  • Creative musical activities
  • Feedback and weekly practice goals

Students receive clear, manageable guidance for home practice so they understand not only what to practice, but also how to practice effectively.

RCM Certified Piano Exam Specialist

RCM Exam Preparation

Ms. Gigi is an RCM Certified Piano Exam Specialist and offers structured preparation for students who are ready and interested in pursuing Royal Conservatory examinations. Preparation may include repertoire, etudes, technical requirements, sight-reading, ear training, theory, performance readiness, and strategies for managing the examination experience. RCM examinations are optional. Students progress according to their individual readiness, motivation, and musical goals rather than being rushed toward a fixed examination date.

Progress Beyond the Lesson

Meaningful progress depends on what happens between lessons as well as during them. Students receive clear, age-appropriate practice priorities, while families receive practical guidance for supporting a positive and consistent home routine. As students grow, they are gradually taught how to organize their practice, identify challenges, and solve musical problems more independently.

Choosing the Right Piano

Regular access to a suitable instrument is essential for progress. Families are welcome to ask for guidance when selecting an acoustic piano or a digital piano with appropriately weighted keys, a stable bench, and a functional pedal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best age to start piano lessons?

While every child is unique, we generally recommend starting around age 5 or 6, when fine motor skills and attention spans are sufficiently developed. Ms. Gigi adapts lessons to each child’s readiness and curiosity about music.

Do we need a piano at home before starting?

Yes, regular access to a suitable instrument is essential for progress. While an acoustic piano is ideal, a digital piano with 88 weighted keys and a stable bench is a valid starting point. Families are welcome to ask for guidance when selecting their first instrument.

How much practice is expected each week?

Daily practice is more effective than one long session. For beginners, we recommend 15–20 minutes daily, 5–6 days a week. As students grow, they are taught how to organize their practice and solve musical problems independently.

Where are lessons located?

Private lessons are held in our professional North San Jose studio. The environment is designed to be quiet, focused, and inspiring, providing students with access to high-quality instruments and resources.

Can my child prepare for RCM examinations?

Yes. Ms. Gigi is an RCM Certified Piano Exam Specialist and offers structured preparation for students interested in pursuing exams. However, exams are optional; students progress according to their individual readiness and musical goals.
